Britain said farewell to Queen Elizabeth II on Monday at a historic state funeral attended by world leaders, before a ceremonial journey past hundreds of thousands of mourners to her final place of rest.

Huge crowds gathered in London to watch as the queen’s flag-draped coffin, topped with the Imperial State Crown, her orb and sceptre, was carried slowly to a gun carriage from parliament’s Westminster Hall where it had lain in state since Wednesday.

Queen Elizabeth’s coffin was lowered into a vault at Windsor Castle, her final resting place, on Monday after a day of inimitable pageantry that drew world leaders to her funeral and huge crowds to the streets to say farewell to a revered monarch.

Hundreds of thousands of well-wishers lined the route her hearse took from London, throwing flowers, cheering, and clapping as it passed from the city to the English countryside that she so loved much.

As the last notes of the poignant Last Post trumpet fanfare echoed around the vaulted ceilings of London’s historic Westminster Abbey, a deep silence pervaded the majestic gothic cathedral.

In the building where for a thousand years the monarchs of England and later Britain have been crowned, buried and married, presidents, prime ministers, kings, queens, sultans, and an emperor stood still, heads bowed.

In Hong Kong, hundreds kept up with Queen Elizabeth’s funeral on their phones as they queued for hours to pay their tributes. In Sydney, Australia, customers packed into pubs to watch the ceremony on screens.

And in Paris, France, bar owner Thibaud Dupont showed off his new tattoo of the monarch on his forearm.

Queen Elizabeth’s coffin arrived at Windsor Castle, her final resting place, on Monday after a day of matchless pageantry that drew world leaders to her funeral and hundreds of thousands of well-wishers wanting to say farewell to a revered monarch.

Queen Elizabeth II’s great-grandchildren George and Charlotte attended her funeral on Monday, signaling the more prominent role they will now play as the children of the first in line for the throne.

The two eldest children of the Prince and Princess of Wales joined the funeral procession as it entered and left Westminster Abbey.

In airport lounges, parks, pubs, and city squares, people gathered in front of screens across Britain on Monday to watch the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

Usually busy streets fell silent as young and old came together in towns, villages and cities outside London for the live broadcast of the service beamed in from Westminster Abbey.

The tens of thousands gathered in central London for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II fell silent and bowed their heads on Monday to follow her funeral service in Westminster Abbey and watch the procession of her coffin afterward through the city.

Some watching in Hyde Park dabbed their eyes and others sobbed during the service, while later, children were hoisted in the air or put on parents’ shoulders to see her coffin pass.

Britain said farewell to Queen Elizabeth II on Monday at a state funeral attended by world leaders, before a historic last ceremonial journey through the streets of London packed with sorrowful mourners.

World leaders on Monday joined members of the public in two minutes’ silence in memory of Queen Elizabeth II at her state funeral in London.

The funeral of Britain’s longest-serving monarch ended with “God Save the King“, the reworded national anthem after her son Charles’s accession.

Tens of thousands of people, many of whom had camped out overnight, lined the route of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral procession on Monday and gathered in London’s parks to bid farewell to the only British monarch most have ever known.

Complete silence fell over Hyde Park as people who had been picnicking and chatting for hours, stood and watched the queen’s coffin brought to Westminster Abbey. Crowds are following the funeral service on large television screens or from a radio broadcast on loudspeakers.

Queen Elizabeth’s closest relatives were ashen-faced as they followed her coffin to Westminster Abbey for her funeral on Monday, in a meticulously choreographed procession that nevertheless betrayed the high emotions of the day.

Elizabeth’s son King Charles and his three younger siblings, Anne, Andrew and Edward, made up the first line behind the gun carriage pulled by 142 Royal Navy sailors that bore the queen’s coffin from nearby Westminster Hall to the abbey.

On behalf of the royal family, British Ambassador to the Philippines Laure Beaufils accepted Senate Resolution No. 14, expressing its profound sympathy and sincere condolences on the passing of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

A Paris metro station on the Champs-Elysees has been renamed Elizabeth II for the day as a tribute to the British queen during her funeral.

Signs in the George V metro station — named after the queen’s grandfather — were replaced on Monday as a mark of respect for the British sovereign, who will be buried later after a service in London.

The presence of Spain’s disgraced former King Juan Carlos at the state funeral of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has prompted criticism at home, with one political party calling him a “criminal on the run”.

Spain’s official delegation is led by King Felipe and his wife Queen Letizia. Felipe came to the throne when his father abdicated in 2014 amid a series of scandals.

King Charles and other senior British royals followed Queen Elizabeth’s coffin into Westminster Abbey on Monday, joining world leaders and monarchs to bid farewell to a beloved figure who unified the nation through her 70-year reign.

In scenes of inimitable pageantry, pall bearers carried her flag-draped casket along the aisle in the country’s first state funeral since 1965, when Winston Churchill was afforded the honor.

London’s City Hall said at 09:20 a.m. (0820 GMT) that all central viewing areas for the procession in the city were full.

Thousands of people camped overnight in London to get the best spots for viewing Queen Elizabeth’s funeral procession on Monday. The best prepared had tents, sleeping bags, blow up beds and flasks of tea.

Others were sitting or sleeping on the ground in only their jackets. One couple were seen asleep just in their clothes, their arms interlocked for warmth, and, perhaps, for comfort.

The lying-in-state ceremony for Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Hall formally ended and the doors closed to the public ahead of her state funeral on Monday.

Over five days, tens of thousands of people had waited hours in line before filing past her coffin to pay their final respects. The funeral will take place at Westminster Abbey in front of some 2,000 guests.

Queen Elizabeth II will be laid to rest in the King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel, alongside her mother, father, sister and husband.

The queen, however, will not be joining the host of other royals who are interred in the Royal Vault beneath the chapel.

Queen Elizabeth II’s death means that around 600 of her favorite brands risk losing their royal warrant and must now await the approval of her successor King Charles III.

Fortnum and Mason teas, Burberry raincoats, Cadbury chocolate and even broomstick and dog food manufacturers are among those facing the loss of royal prestige.

Prince Andrew, who has effectively been banished from royal life amid ongoing fallout from sex assault accusations, on Sunday paid tribute to the “compassion” of his “mummy”, Queen Elizabeth II.

“Mummy, your love for a son, your compassion, your care, your confidence, I will treasure forever,” he said in a statement.

The ceremonial processions taking Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin to London’s Westminster Abbey and then towards her burial place at Windsor reflect the ancient traditions of the British monarchy.

Westminster Abbey in central London has been the site of coronations, weddings and burials of English and then British royalty for nearly 1,000 years.

On Monday, it will be the venue for the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth, who died on Sept. 8 in Balmoral, Scotland, at the age of 96. She was also married and crowned in the Abbey.

Britain, world leaders and royalty from across the globe will on Monday bid a final farewell to Queen Elizabeth, the last towering figure of her era, at a state funeral of inimitable pageantry.

At 6.30 a.m. (0530 GMT), an official lying-in-state period ends after four days in which hundreds of thousands have queued to file past the casket of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch at London’s historic Westminster Hall.

US President Joe Biden paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth on the eve of her state funeral on Sunday, appearing on a balcony overlooking the coffin of Britain’s late monarch as she lay in state.

Biden is among the scores of dignitaries and royals from across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas who will attend Monday’s funeral. Hundreds of thousands of people have descended on London to pay tribute to Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, who died on Sept. 8 aged 96.

Irene Marcos-Araneta will be the “special representative” of her older brother, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., to attend the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.

Irene Marcos will be accompanied by her husband, Gregoria Araneta III, Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles said in a statement issued on Sunday.

US President Joe Biden arrived in Britain late Saturday ahead of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, an AFP photographer on board Air Force One said.

Biden’s plane arrived at London Stansted Airport outside the capital just before 10:00 pm (2100 GMT).

Britain was gearing up Sunday for the momentous state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II as King Charles III prepared to host world leaders and as mourners queued for the final 24 hours left to view her coffin.

The first members of the public were already camping out in advance to catch a glimpse of Monday’s grand farewell at Westminster Abbey, which is expected to bring London to a standstill and be watched by billions of viewers worldwide.

When newly elected indigenous Australian parliamentarian Lidia Thorpe took her oath to office last month, she raised her fist above her head in protest and labelled Queen Elizabeth II a “colonizing queen”.

“It was like kneeling to the murderer,” the Greens senator told Reuters this week. “I had to swear my allegiance to a colonizing power that has caused so much harm to our people.”

Taiwan’s de facto ambassador in London received a “special invite” to sign the book of condolence for Britain’s Queen Elizabeth, the island’s foreign ministry said, adding he was given the same treatment as other dignitaries.

Britain, like most countries, has no diplomatic ties with Chinese-claimed Taiwan though they have close unofficial ones. Democratically governed Taiwan is largely excluded from most international events and bodies due to Beijing’s objections.

Britain’s new Queen Consort Camilla paid tribute Sunday to Queen Elizabeth II for carving her own role as a “solitary woman” in a world dominated by men.

In her first public comments broadcast since Queen Elizabeth’s death, King Charles III’s wife said it must have been “so difficult” for the late monarch, who inherited the throne in 1952 when she was just 25 years old.

President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, headed to London on Saturday to attend Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, departing Washington without any former U.S. presidents, who are not taking part in the somber event.

The White House said earlier this week that the royal invitation to the funeral, which takes place on Monday at Westminster Abbey, was for the Bidens only.

Princes William and Harry stood vigil at either end of the coffin of their grandmother Queen Elizabeth on Saturday, heads bowed as a line of mourners streamed past the late monarch’s lying-in-state.

The two sons of King Charles, attired in military uniforms, stood in silence at a 15-minute vigil in the vast Westminster Hall where the coffin has been lying since Wednesday, draped in the Royal Standard and with the bejewelled Imperial State Crown on top.

Former England football captain David Beckham said it was “very emotional” to pay his last respects to Queen Elizabeth II on Friday after he queued for hours through the night to file past her coffin.

London’s police force said the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth will be the biggest security operation it has ever undertaken as prime ministers, presidents and royals come together on Monday to pay their respects to Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.

The queen’s funeral is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of people to London’s streets, echoing other important events in Britain’s history, including her coronation in 1953, the funeral of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 1965 and the death of Princess Diana in 1997.

The entry to an already miles-long queue to see Queen Elizabeth lying in state in London resumed after a pause on Friday, with the government saying the current wait-time is over 24 hours, in temperatures set to plummet to 7 degrees celsius (45°F).

Elizabeth died in Scotland aged 96 last week, prompting an outpouring of emotion that drew tens of thousands out to see her coffin on its journey to London, and that has now led many more to join the long line to pay their final respects during a four-day lying-in-state ceremony.

King Charles will be joined by his siblings to mount a silent vigil at the coffin of his late mother Queen Elizabeth on Friday as thousands of mourners stand in line for miles to pay their last respects to the monarch during her lying-in-state.

Charles, his sister Princess Anne, and brothers Princes Andrew and Edward will join the ceremonial guard for the 15-minute vigil at Westminster Hall in central London where their 96-year-old mother’s coffin has rested since Wednesday evening.

Hundreds of foreign royals and leaders are expected to attend the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in London on Monday in one of the biggest diplomatic gatherings in decades.

Westminster Abbey has space for around 2,000 people, so only heads of state and one or two guests have reportedly been invited to Britain’s first state funeral for six decades.

Prince William has told how walking behind his grandmother’s coffin brought back challenging memories, alluding to the death of his mother, as mourners from all walks of life queued for hours on Thursday to file past the late monarch’s coffin.

The new heir to the throne told well-wishers that the military procession had “brought back a few memories”, a nod to the day 25 years ago when, as a boy of 15, he had followed the casket of his mother Princess Diana to her funeral.

TAIPEI — Taiwan is looking for the most “appropriate” way to express its condolences for the death of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and is still in the process of understanding plans for her state funeral, the island’s foreign ministry said on Thursday.

The queen’s funeral will take place in London on Monday, and a host of world leaders, royalty and other dignitaries have already said they will attend.

Twenty-five years after capturing the hearts of the world when they walked behind their mother Diana’s coffin, princes William and Harry on Wednesday again helped lead the most poignant of processions.

This time, the estranged brothers were reunited in grief with the royal family as they honored their grandmother Queen Elizabeth II, on a final pageant-filled journey from Buckingham Palace.

British Prime Minister Liz Truss is expected to hold one-to-one talks with U.S. President Joe Biden and other world leaders gathered in London before Queen Elizabeth’s funeral on Monday, The Times reported on Thursday.

Truss may also meet President Emmanuel Macron of France, as well as other key UK allies such as Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Canada’s Justin Trudeau, the report said.

Mourners from all walks of life filed past the coffin of Queen Elizabeth through the night as she lay in state in London’s ancient Westminster Hall, paying their final respects to Britain’s longest-reigning monarch before her funeral on Monday.

After days of processions and ritual as the queen’s body was brought to London from Balmoral, Scotland, where she died last Thursday at the age of 96, this was the opportunity for ordinary people to take a direct part in a ceremony. Many were in tears as they passed by the flag-draped coffin.

King Charles, his sons Princes William and Harry, and other senior royals joined a solemn procession accompanying Queen Elizabeth’s coffin as the late monarch made her final journey from Buckingham Palace on Wednesday.

Huge crowds gathered in central London to witness the queen being taken from the palace to parliament as artillery guns fired salutes and Big Ben tolled, the latest in a series of poignant ceremonies as the nation mourns the queen who died last week aged 96 after seven decades on the throne.

Queen Elizabeth’s funeral will take place in London on Monday, Sept. 19, and a host of world leaders, royalty and other dignitaries will attend.

LONDON — Mourners wanting to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth in London may have to queue for up to 7.5 kilometers (4.5 miles), the government said on Tuesday as it set out arrangements for her lying-in-state.

Around 750,000 people are expected to file past Elizabeth’s coffin inside parliament’s Westminster Hall from 5 p.m. (1600 GMT) on Wednesday. The queen died last week, aged 96, at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has declared Monday, the day of Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, a federal holiday to mourn the monarch’s death.

“On September 19, Canadians from across the country will pay their respects to Canada’s longest-reigning sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” Trudeau said in a statement on Tuesday. “For most Canadians, she was the only monarch we ever knew and many of us felt a deep affection and appreciation for her dedication to Canada.”

Just over 5 million people viewed Queen Elizabeth’s final flight on Tuesday, as the journey carrying the late monarch’s body from Edinburgh to London became the most tracked flight in history.

Flight tracking website Flightradar24 said a total of 4.79 million people watched the flight live online, with a further quarter of million people watching on its YouTube channel.

King Charles and members of the royal family received the coffin of the late Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, after tens of thousands of people lined the streets in heavy rain to mark its arrival in the British capital.

On a dark night, the well-lit hearse traveled slowly from a nearby airport through London, with crowds stood all along the route, some in the road, others throwing flowers, and many ditching their cars or running from nearby streets to catch a glimpse of the cortege.

Britain has not invited representatives from Russia, Belarus and Myanmar to attend Queen Elizabeth’s state funeral due to be held next Monday, a Whitehall source said on Tuesday.

Britain, along with its Western allies, has sought to isolate Russia and its ally Belarus on the world stage with economic sanctions and other measures in response to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Elizabeth is majestic, hardy and “very fashionable,” said a top Singapore flower curator — referring not to the late monarch, but to an orchid named after the queen when she visited the former British colony.

After Queen Elizabeth II’s death last week, the city-state’s Botanic Gardens loaned a towering sprig of Dendrobium Elizabeth to the British high commissioner’s residence, to be displayed alongside pictures of the monarch.

Queen Elizabeth’s coffin will be flown to London on Tuesday at the end of 24 hours of lying at rest in Edinburgh’s historic cathedral, where her son King Charles and his three siblings held a silent vigil.

Charles was joined by his sister Anne and brothers Andrew and Edward for the 10 minute vigil on Monday at St Giles’ Cathedral, where they stood, heads bowed, at the four sides of the coffin while members of the public filed past to pay their respects.

The last American president to see Queen Elizabeth, Joe Biden, sat down with her over tea at Windsor Castle in June 2021, where they chatted about Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping.

Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, has paused new episodes of her Spotify podcast during the official mourning period for Queen Elizabeth, according to an alert on the platform on Monday.

Earlier in the day, her husband Prince Harry paid a highly personal tribute to the late queen, saying how he cherished the time he had spent with his grandmother and promising to honor his father King Charles as the new monarch.

After queuing for hours to pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth, the first members of the public to file past the coffin of Britain’s longest-serving monarch on Monday spoke of their sadness and a sense of peace within the cathedral.

Queen Elizabeth died on Thursday in her holiday home at Balmoral in the Scottish Highlands, and her coffin was taken along the Royal Mile in the Scottish capital on Monday to lay at rest in the city’s St. Giles Cathedral for 24 hours.

Loyalists laid flowers by a huge mural of a young Queen Elizabeth in a fiercely British corner of west Belfast, looking back at what they saw as a glorious past, and forward to what they feared was an uncertain future.

A few hundred meters away, across steel and concrete “peace walls”, many Irish nationalists reacted to the death of a woman they once saw as a symbol of British oppression with indifference or, at most, polite sympathy.

King Charles will meet lawmakers in parliament in London on Monday before flying to Edinburgh to join his siblings in a solemn procession when the coffin of his mother Queen Elizabeth is taken to the city’s historic cathedral.

South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol will visit London, New York and Canada next week in his first trip to those countries, primarily to attend the funeral of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and visit the U.N. General Assembly, Yoon’s office said on Monday.

Yoon is scheduled to depart on Sept. 18 for London for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth, who died on Thursday at age 96, national security adviser Kim Sung-han told reporters.

Britain’s Prince Harry paid a highly personal tribute on Monday to his “granny,” the late Queen Elizabeth, saying how he cherished the time he had spent with the 96-year-old who died last week and how he would honor his father as the new king.

In a statement, Harry, who stepped down from royal duties with his wife Meghan in 2020, praised the queen’s service as head of state and monarch, and also spoke emotionally of her role as a grandmother.

Mourners will on Monday get the first opportunity to pay respects before the coffin of Queen Elizabeth II, as it lies in an Edinburgh cathedral where King Charles III will preside over a vigil.

The Senate adopted a resolution expressing sympathy and condolences over the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.

During Monday’s plenary session, Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri sponsored Senate Resolution No. 198, a resolution expressing the profound sympathy and sincere condolences of the Senate of the Philippines on the death of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

An Australian city councilman who met Britain’s Queen Elizabeth on her final trip to his country in 2011 remembered a warm and engaging monarch who showed a genuine interest in his life.

“She chatted to us, and I’m sure she had conversations like that a thousand times a day but, when you spoke to her, it felt one-on-one and genuine,” said Ben Mitchell, as he recalled his encounter in Perth with the queen, who died last week, aged 96.

Queen Elizabeth’s oak coffin began its journey from Balmoral Castle, her summer retreat in the Scottish Highlands, down to Edinburgh on Sunday, with thousands of Scots expected to line the streets to pay their respects.

Elizabeth, who died on Thursday aged 96, spoke last year of her “deep and abiding affection” for Scotland and recalled the “many happy memories” that she and her late husband Prince Philip shared in the country.

Prince William said he was honored to be made the new Prince of Wales when he spoke with Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford on Sunday, Kensington Palace said in a statement.

William was given the title, previously held by his father for more than 50 years, following the death of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth last week.

A key question around Britain’s royal succession was resolved on Sunday when it emerged scandal-hit Prince Andrew and his ex-wife will look after Queen Elizabeth II’s corgi dogs after her death.

The prince and his former spouse Sarah Ferguson will take on Muick and Sandy following the queen’s death at Balmoral on Thursday aged 96, Andrew’s spokesman said.

Queen Elizabeth‘s coffin arrived in Edinburgh on Sunday after a six-hour journey from her summer home in the Scottish Highlands, past tens of thousands of mourners lining the route, many in sombre silence, some applauding and others in tears.

At the end of its slow journey through picturesque Scottish countryside, villages, small towns and cities, soldiers wearing kilts carried the coffin to the throne room of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Elizabeth’s official Scottish residence, where it will remain overnight.

The coffin of Queen Elizabeth will be taken from her home in the Scottish Highlands on a slow, six-hour journey to Edinburgh on Sunday, giving the public a chance to line the roads in tribute to the monarch who died after seven decades on the throne.

The death of the 96-year-old has provoked tears, sadness and warm tributes, not just from the queen’s own close family and many in Britain, but also from around the globe – reflecting her presence on the world stage for the last 70 years.

King Charles was officially proclaimed head of state of both Australia and New Zealand at ceremonies on Sunday in the nations’ capitals.

In New Zealand, the proclamation of Charles as monarch, taking over from Queen Elizabeth who died on Thursday aged 96, took place in the parliament in Wellington.

The state funeral for Queen Elizabeth II will be held at Westminster Abbey in London at 11:00 am (1000 GMT) on Monday September 19, royal officials said on Saturday.

Buckingham Palace also confirmed that the queen, who died on Thursday aged 96, will then be taken to St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, west of London, for a committal service.

LONDON – Princes William and Harry and their wives put on a rare united front Saturday to view tributes to Queen Elizabeth II, threatening to upstage their father Charles on the day he was officially proclaimed king.

The impromptu walkabout by William and Kate with Harry and Meghan, their first joint public appearance since March 2020, came as royal officials unveiled plans for the run-up to the queen’s state funeral on September 19.

As Britain prepares to stage its first state funeral in nearly six decades, security officials are planning what is expected to be the “biggest policing and protective operation” in UK history.

Police are dusting off long-standing plans to keep safe attendees — including global political leaders and royalty — at Queen Elizabeth II’s historic funeral, as well as the millions predicted to flock to London around the time of the event.

Netflix suspended filming of its British royals drama “The Crown” on Friday following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the company said.

The acclaimed show is currently filming its sixth season, having charted the late monarch’s life through multiple decades over the course of its previous seasons.

Canadians were attached to Queen Elizabeth II right to the end, but their relationship with the monarchy has been increasingly strained and experts believe her death on Thursday will reignite debate over its future.

“Canada is a monarchist exception in the middle of a rather republican continent,” said Marc Chevrier, a politics professor at the University of Quebec in Montreal.

Queen Elizabeth II’s corgi dogs were the most loyal of all the monarch’s servants, providing domestic companionship during nearly a century in the public glare.

Britain’s King Charles on Friday bestowed on his eldest son William and daughter-in-law Kate the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales, which he and his late wife Diana previously held.

Britain’s King Charles described the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth as the moment he had “been dreading,” in an exchange with Prime Minister Liz Truss on Friday which was picked up by television cameras.

The prime minister’s first meeting with the new monarch came after Charles returned to London, from Scotland, to cheering crowds outside Buckingham Palace who had come to pay their respects to the queen.

Former president and now House of Representatives Senior Deputy Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has offered her condolences to the Royal family following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, saying that she will forever treasure the late monarch’s advice.

In a statement on Friday, a few hours after the longest-serving British sovereign died, Arroyo said that Queen Elizabeth II gave her some advice and encouragement when the former president visited Her Majesty.

Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II has called off some weekend events to mark the 50th anniversary of her accession following the death of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, the palace said Friday.

The Danish queen, Elizabeth’s third cousin, has cancelled a carriage procession through Copenhagen and a palace balcony appearance, while a reception and lunch at City Hall has been postponed.

Britain’s royal family will observe a period of mourning that ends on the seventh day after the funeral of Queen Elizabeth, with flags at royal residences to remain at half mast.

“Following the death of Her Majesty The Queen, it is His Majesty The King’s wish that a period of Royal Mourning be observed from now until seven days after The Queen’s Funeral,” a statement said.

The British government on Friday officially declared the start of a period of national mourning for Queen Elizabeth, publishing ‘national mourning guidance.’

The document, which carried guidance on flying flags, information on travel, and other business and public services, stated that the mourning will continue until the end of the day of the state funeral.

Roger Federer hailed Queen Elizabeth II for her “elegance” and “grace” as the world of sport stopped to pay tribute to the British monarch following her death aged 96.

Sporting events in Britain scheduled for Friday, including Test cricket and European golf’s PGA Championship, were canceled as a mark of respect.

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdulaziz and the Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman sent condolences to British King Charles III early on Friday on Queen Elizabeth’s death, according to two statements on state news agency SPA.

“Her majesty was a role model for leadership that will be immortalized in history,” the King said.

Queen Elizabeth made a “great contribution” towards strengthening Japan’s ties with Britain, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Friday, adding that her death was a big loss for the international community.

“I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing,” Kishida told reporters. “The government of Japan expresses its heartfelt condolences to the British royal family, the British government and the British people.”

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the death of Queen Elizabeth as the end of a chapter in history, as leaders across the Pacific mourned the death of the 96-year-old monarch.

Following Elizabeth’s death on Thursday, her eldest son Charles became monarch of the United Kingdom and the head of state of 14 other realms including Australia, New Zealand, Tuvalu, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.

House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez mourned the death of Britain’s longest-reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II, whom he referred to as a “great world leader.”

In a statement on Friday, Romualdez offered his sympathies to Britain’s royal family.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump called the late Queen Elizabeth a “great woman” who never made mistakes following the death of Britain’s 96 year-old monarch on Thursday.

Brazil’s government decreed on Thursday three days of mourning in honor of Queen Elizabeth II following her death.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined world leaders on Thursday in offering condolences to the British Royal Family on the death of Queen Elizabeth, whose passing at the age of 96 marks the end of an era for many in Britain and the wider Commonwealth.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are to travel to Scotland after Queen Elizabeth II’s doctors issued a bulletin about the monarch’s health, a spokesperson for the couple said Thursday.

Britain’s Prince Charles and Prince William have traveled to Queen Elizabeth’s residence at Balmoral Castle in Scotland following news that doctors were concerned for her health.

“Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall have traveled to Balmoral,” a Clarence House spokesperson said.

Doctors are concerned about the health of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth and have recommended the 96-year-old remains under medical supervision, Buckingham Palace said on Thursday, with immediate family traveling to be by her side.

The queen, Britain’s longest reigning sovereign and the world’s oldest monarch, has been suffering from what Buckingham Palace has called “episodic mobility problems” since the end of last year.

She has been forced to cut back on her public engagements since then and on Wednesday canceled a planned virtual meeting with senior ministers after being advised to rest by her doctors.
